How to cut layers on your wig?

Before cutting layers on your wig, it’s essential to prepare some right tools.

  • Wig stand
  • Comb
  • Spray bottle with water
  • Hair clips
  • T-shaped pins
  • Scissors

Step-by-step guidance to cut layers on your wig:

  • Secure the wig on the wig stand: Place a few T-shaped pins along the lace line (i.e. the starting point of the hairline) and a few more near each ear to secure the wig to the stand. If it is a full lace wig, place the pin near the hairline. If it is a lace front wig, place the pin inside the lace line.
  • Spray your wig with water: Spray water until the hair is as moist as freshly washed. Comb all of your hair back, leaving a 1/2-inch gap in front of the wig. Ensure that the wig is 100% human hair. Some synthetic wigs may be damaged due to wetting or everyday styling.
  • Clip the front sections of hair in front of the ears: Use two hair clips to fold the front half of the wig hair into your hands. Clip the hair in front of the ear to ensure that it is not accidentally cut off when folding the back part. The front part also needs to be layered, but starting from the back and ending from the front will be easier because the back is usually the area that needs to be processed most.
  • Secure the top section of hair: Use another hair clip to clip up the top hair, leaving only the bottom and middle hair. Clamp the upper part of the hair near the front end of the wig hair to keep it away from the other parts of the wig hair. If it is difficult to separate hair by hand, you can use a comb to separate the hair.
  • Cut layers after everything is ready: Hold a small piece of hair between your middle and index fingers. Cut 2 to 3 inches (5.1 to 7.6 centimeters) wide each time. Clamp the length of the first layer between your middle and index fingers, and then cut upwards towards your fingers at a 45-degree angle. Then take down the top part and repeat the above process.
  • Comb out the wig hair: After finishing cutting layers, use a comb to comb all of the hair down. Combing out wig hair helps to pull down some hair strands that may have been missed and still needs to be trimmed. Therefore, please try on a wig to see if you need to make further adjustment.
