Something you need to prepare beforehand:
- Folding wig stand
- Wide tooth comb
- Hair shampoo
- Hair conditioner
- Towel
- Wig adhesive remover
Step by Step Guide to Wash a Wig:
- Fill up a large bowl with lukewarm water and add in some shampoo to make a diluted mixture. Diluting the shampoo will ensure that you’re not over saturating the hair.
- Dip your hairpiece in, making sure the water is absorbed. You want to focus on cleaning not only the hair, but the underside of the cap too.
- Empty the shampoo mixture and create a diluted conditioner bath! If your hairpiece is extra dry, you can put the conditioner directly on the hair or even do a hair mask to help bring back some moisture.
- Rinse the wig thoroughly with cold water. Be gentle and remember not to twist or wring the wig dry. Apply a small amount of hair oil, such as jojoba oil, on the wig to maintain moisture and reduce restlessness.
- Place your piece on an open wig stand to dry overnight (or blow dry if you’re in a hurry). The open wig stand will ensure that the inside of the cap is aerated and no moisture will get trapped, creating that mildew smell.
Points for attention:
- Do not brush the wig while it is wet, which can damage the fibers and lead to frizz.
- If your wig is long, make sure the hair is combed out and not tangled.
- Do not use 2-in-1 shampoo containing conditioner.
- Remember never to rub too hard when washing it.
- Use conditioner on the wig, but do not place it too close to the hair root because the conditioner can easily loosen the knotting and cause the hair to fall out.
- If you want to restyle your wig, try to minimize using hairspray on your wig and turn to mousse or lightweight styling products.
- After drying it, please keep your wig out of direct sunlight and place it on a hair stand or in hairnets.
